Are all types of alcohol bad for your hair?

False,

Although most of the people have the association that spotting alcohol in an ingredient list is always a BIG no go.

There are two varieties of alcohol: drying alcohols and fatty alcohols in cosmetic products.

Fatty alcohols are most of the times derived from a natural origin. (plant based) this type of alcohol is used to make a formula thicker, creamier and to be able to make water and oil all work together by emulsifying. (An emulsifier is something that binds oil and water-based components together)

List of fatty alcohols:

✔Lauryl alcohol
✔Cetyl alcohol
✔Myristyl alcohol
✔Stearyl alcohol
✔Cetearyl alcohol
✔Behenyl alcohol
✔Cetyl alcohol
✔Isocetyl alcohol
✔Isostearyl alcohol
✔C30-50 alcohol
✔Lanolin alcohol

Even though these fatty alcohols won’t dry out your hair. It still can give some people skin irritation or an allergic reaction when they apply it onto their hair/body. That’s why in some cases it’s better to stay completely away from products with an alcohol included.

Drying alcohols are very harsh and will make your hair effectively more dry. That’s why most of the time you will see those alcohols in styling products like: hairspray, gel and mousse. Where you want the product to give your hair some more hold throughout the day.
